Stereotypical Magazines

brave new world.jpg

This magazine picture is very counterstereotypical because the actress in this photo looks very powerful in this photo this is due to the use of a medium close up and the fact that it only focuses on her from the chest up. Her costume is also very counterstereotypical, this is because she is wearing a suit and a tie which is commonly associated with men but in this magazine we see a woman wearing it. This makes her look like she is in power which contrasts from other magazine covers. Her clothes aren't as revealing as most other magazine covers have their female models in revealing outfits.

The colours in this photo are also very counterstereotypical because they are very tinted and dark, this subverts the stereotype that women love bright colours such as pink. These colours also make her stand out from the dark green background. The text is also very small and on the side of her making her the focus of the magazine, this different from most magazine covers because have the words in the middle of the photo and have the subject in the middle.

This magazine cover also subverts stereotypes of women being submissive, this is because of Jisoo's NVC in the picture. In this photo she looks like she has all of the control, she also looks more dominant.

This is a teaser photo for an new album. This poster is very stereotypical because it features lots of feminine colours such as pink and white. This colours have connotations of femininity and kindness. Her costume and her makeup are also very stereotypical as they mostly have pink colours in them, so she is presented as childish and girly. Her costume is revealing a bit of her chest and her neck because the top is a bit low cut.  They have used a mid-shot so we can see her from the waist up.

Her costume is reinforces the stereotype that girls are obsessed boys and love, this is because of the hearts on her earrings, which are also pink. She also has her hair in pigtails which is a hairstyle that we would associate with little girls or younger girls so this presents her as very young and childish. She has pink hair accessories.

Her NVC is very innocent as she has a very soft look on her face. She looks submissive which reinforces another stereotype of women having to be sexually submissive and men being dominant.

Gaming Representations

zelda_edited.jpg

Zelda is presented as a very kind and benevolent leader, this is a stereotype for white women to be seen as sweet. She is also the queen of Hyrule which is another stereotype for white people to have hegemony over everyone else. Zelda is very kind and forgiving to everyone, even people who has wronged her such as former enemies which is also a stereotype for white women to be more forgiving and softer.

Zelda is also very hostile to Link in the beginning of the game which is counter-stereotypical, however she is also presented to be very beautiful which is another stereotype that white women are viewed as more beautiful and more desirable.

baal_edited.jpg

Baal is dressed in traditional Chinese clothing. We can infer for this that she is Chinese or she has Chinese heritage . Baal is also presented as self centred and very harsh towards the other characters, this is a counterstereotype for women especially asian women because they are often presented as submissive and quiet.

She is also a very suppressive leader. Baal however is also very cold and calculating, this is a stereotype for East Asian women especially Chinese women. They are often portrayed as cruel and stone cold in the media which is know as the 'Dragon Lady' stereotype.

Positively Influenced: The impact of the Media

  • This is Julia Ayer, she is a vegan YouTuber who often showcases her lifestyles to others, people in her comments have often said they have become vegan because of her content and that it has helped them a lot. The dominant reading of her YouTube channel is that she is encouraging people to live healthily and to also save the planet. The negotiated reading could be that other people could say that she is pushing her lifestyle on to them but they can see how what she is doing can be seen as a good thing. The oppositional reading is that she is pushing her lifestyle on to others and forcing them to become something they do not want to be.

  • This is That Curly Top, she talks about sustainable living on her YouTube Channel. She often uses her platform to educate people on the climate change issue and supports BIPOC businesses. Many of her subscribers have become more aware of the problem surrounding climate change and the things they can do to help such as living sustainably and giving up on fast fashion. The dominant reading of her channel is that she is helping to educate people about preserving nature, however the negotiated reading could be that they can understand why what she is doing can be seen as a good thing but not everyone has the means or enough money to buy those kinds of products.

Moral Panic

What is moral panic?

-  Moral Panic occurs when someone or something is defined by the media as a threat to the values or interests of society.

  • The key moral panic theorist is Stanley Cohen. Cohen suggested in his 1972 book ‘Folk Devils and Moral Panics’ that a moral panic occurs when “condition, episode, person or group of people emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests”.

  • Stanley Cohen believes the media play an important role in enforcing moral panic, even by just reporting the news.

  • In Cohen’s view the media overreact or sensationalise aspects of behaviour which challenge social norms. The media’s representation therefore then helps to define it, which can then lead to outsiders adopting and observing the behaviour based on the model they see in the media. The moral panic depicted by the media fuels further unacceptable behaviour. - revision world
